“Do I need to be an English Major graduate in order to become a successful copywriter?”
My answer?
A big fat NO!
You see, this is one of the misconceptions that aspiring copywriters have when it comes to pursuing this skill.
They think that in order to become a successful copywriter…
You need to be an English major who is excellent at grammar and syntax.
And again, my answer is NO.
Why am I so confident in busting this myth?
Here’s why…
I recently created a poll inside my exclusive Facebook group to find out what were the courses that my copywriting students took in college.
And to my surprise, most of them are Engineering graduates.
Ang layo, diba?
Followed by Business Administration graduates…
Then Nursing graduates…
Saka pa lang pumasok yung Communication and other English related courses.
And this poll proves my point.
In fact, even the copywriters in my network aren’t English majors too.
But they are very successful in serving their clients and helping them sell their products and services through copywriting.
“If so, then what do I need to do to become a successful copywriter like them?”, you may ask.
It’s simple.
You need to be good at knowing your market.
How?
By learning how to conduct a thorough research process that will allow you to understand your market on a deeper level.
Because when you truly understand your market, you will be able to speak their language.
And this is a very important factor when writing a converting copy.
Because once you use their language, your messaging will surely resonate with them.
Thus, making it easier for them to take whatever is your desired action.
And once you have mastered this, you are already on your way to becoming a successful copywriter.
The course you took in college or the current English and grammar knowledge you have…it really doesn’t matter.
What matters is your willingness to learn and your passion to help businesses increase their sales by writing copy that sells.
Who knows?
You may actually be one of the sought-after and highly paid copywriters in the Philippines years from now.
I hope you learned something new today and hopefully, this encourages you to finally pursue your copywriting career.
