Arthur asked:
Aside from a survey, How to research for a niche na zero knowledge? Yung tipong you’ll get enough ammunition to write daily emails for a month
My answer:
Hi Arthur,
While I write copy for the one market (supplement), I seldom write copy for the same niche. Here’s what I mean:
Last month, I wrote about keto, the next project was for a blood pressure supplement, and the recent one was for a blood sugar support.
And to be honest, I don’t have any knowledge of those topics. Plus, I’m not even their market ( baby boomers) so I can say I have 0 idea of their biggest pain points and desires.
But despite that, I was still able to pull it off and write copy that made my client said…
“It hits me in the heart and the gut”
What did I do? Well, I did these:
1: Amazon research which I discussed here:
2: Forum research which I did here:
3. I ask for links and copies of sales letters of their closest competitors.
And when I say closest competitors, that means:
- a. Businesses who sell the same product
- b. Businesses who sell to the same market
I spend reading and studying those copy to identify common ideas, which I can also use in my copy.
- What was the common problem mentioned in the copy?
- What was their solution?
- What was common angle/ hook used?
- What was the common language used?
And a whole lot more.
Pay attention to the details as those data can already help you start writing your copy.
As one A-list copywriter said…
Why do your research from scratch, if someone already did the research for you?
4. I also check for website testimonials and reviews (if they have)
Doing this really helps me understand the reason why their customers buy/ bought their products.
By reading their testimonials, you’ll find their frustrations, the results they expect, they results they experience, and many others that you can use in writing your copy.
I take note and collate those details on my spreadsheet so that… when I’m ready to start writing copy, I can just copy and paste the exact language the market uses.
These research steps could be time-consuming compared to doing surveys and DDS, but they are really helpful especially when you have 0 knowledge of the topic and the market.
Plus, they are proven to work time and time again.
I hope this helps.
